WORKSHOP:
Paint along with watercolor artist, Soon Y. Warren, as we learn her approach to painting vibrant watercolor paintings. While concentrating on technique, the concept of color theory, composition, and color values, we will learn about:
Sketch out the provided reference photo with a HB mechanical pencil onto your watercolor paper.

Paint along with watercolor artist, Soon Y. Warren, as we learn her approach to painting vibrant watercolor paintings. While concentrating on technique, the concept of color theory, composition, and color values, we will learn about:
- Glazing and washing techniques to create a luminous under painting
- How to utilize light and dark values in order to capture the sparkle of glass
- How to approach a painting
- How to incorporate the concept of color theory and color relationships into a painting
Sketch out the provided reference photo with a HB mechanical pencil onto your watercolor paper.
Supply List:
- Nos. 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 round brushes
(Soon Y. likes the brand Silver Black Velvet, 3000s Series) - 2-inch and 2.5-inch hake brushes for washing technique (more than 2 is better)
- 10x14 or 9x12 140 pound cold-pressed watercolor paper or 300 pound cold-pressed paper
- A sturdy board, plywood or bath board, or gator board, larger than your watercolor paper
- Palette (bring any existing pallet you are using, now.)
- Water Bowl
- Frisket (Masking Fluid)- I prefer yellow-colored Winsor & Newton and applicator, slanted plastic brush or any kinds of applicator.
- Cotton rag or paper towels
- Mechanical pencil with .5 mm HB and an eraser
- Spray bottle (controllable nozzle is better)
- 1.5” regular masking tape (Scotch or 3M brand)
- Scrub brushes (synthetic bristle brush)

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Soon Y. Warren was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States in 1987. Her favorite subjects are those found in nature, which inspire in everyday life. “I’m inspired by the beauty and complexity of nature and our surroundings,” she says. “I try to paint the essence of my subjects using my sincere feelings for nature.”
Since Soon Y. began painting full time in 1998, she has had many exhibitions and earned numerous awards. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), American Watercolor Society (AWS), Southern Watercolor Artist (SW), Texas Watercolor Society, Purple Sage Brush (TWS), and Transparent Watercolor Society (TWSA).
Her paintings and articles have been published in Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic Magazine, North Light Book, Southwest Art Magazine, Watercolor Artist Magazine, International Artist Magazine, The Art of Watercolour, and Pratique des Arts. Soon’s paintings were included in Splash: The Best of Watercolor 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,19, 21, and 22 and published in Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing of 3 and 4. Her paintings are in permanent collections of private, corporate and educational institution in national and internationally.
Soon has published numerous instructional books and DVDs.
